Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to practice?

Yes. The programme has been designed to ensure you can develop your defensive skills in a way that is safe for you and your training partners. Our teachers take your welfare very seriously and constantly supervise your practice. In addition, our protective gear help ensure your safety.

I've not heard of Autodefence before. Is it like Karate or Self-Defence?

Though we have been teaching these skills for over 20 years, the name Autodefence is new. It is contemporary and has numerous holistic benefits, which can make a tremendous difference to your life. It is not traditional like some martial arts and it is not just a quick fix self-defence class. It looks smart, is stimulating and works by utilising technical skills that will improve your reflex reactions.

I may not be able to attend regularly. Is it still worth me starting?

Yes, certainly. You’ll have a personal programme card to track your progress, so if you miss a session you can pick up where you left off. You progress at your own rate. If you’re likely to miss a lot of sessions or be very infrequent it might be worth taking private lessons to ensure you maintain good progress.

I've not done anything like this before. I am worried I'll feel awkward.

Many trainees felt like that at the beginning. Fortunately, we realise this so when you join you will receive a complimentary tutorial with your teacher to cover the basics. This ensures that you feel comfortable performing the correct movements and gain maximum benefit from your future sessions. You will also find your classmates are extremely supportive (as you will be with beginners in the future). You can, if you prefer, just train privately.

Will I need to get fit before I start?

If you are fit enough to walk to the gym then you are fit enough to learn Autodefence!

How will I know that this is what I am looking for?

We offer you a no-obligation trial session (ask about special offers). This involves a brief consultation to identify what you would like to gain from your training followed by an explanation of the services that we offer. After this your teacher will take you through some simple hand and foot exercises. At the end you will have a private opportunity to ask any questions that you may have thought of during your session.

Can I bring a friend?

Certainly! In fact we encourage people to come along with their pals as then you have a training buddy between sessions.

How much does it cost?

The training price is set by the local teacher. Our sessions are reasonably priced and discounted if you train more than once a week. If you would like to learn faster then private tuition is available.
